Trip Overview

Are you keen to witness the majestic panorama of Everest? Completed within just two weeks, Everest Base Camp Trek is one of the most demanded Himalayan journeys on the entire planet and course in Nepal. It is a lifetime experience to step on the foot of the world's tallest peak.

A journey with plenty of adventures, the EBC trek offers the mesmerizing beauty of the Great Himalayas, lush greeneries, beautiful valleys, exotic wildlife and vegetation of the Sagarmatha National Park, and plenty of religious shrines including monasteries, chortens, prayer wheels, long Mane walls and fluttering flags, long and high airy suspension bridges, torrential rivers, glacial lakes and pristine waterfalls throughout.

So, we welcome you to join this adventure to reach your final destination for a beautiful experience in the Everest Himalayas of Nepal. Visit Everest Base Cam, and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of being surrounded by the astonishing mountain panorama. Nothing beats the thrill of seeing the sophistication of mighty peaks up close.

The adventure begins with a scenic 35 minutes flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (2860) and vice versa. Flying to and from Kathmandu is the easiest, shortest, and most convenient way to get to Khumbu/Everest region.

Have a cup of tea/coffee gazing at the Himalayas surrounding, gear up, meet the rest crews, and head towards Phakding(2610m/8562), passing the Sherpa villages (sherpa inhabitants dominate the Everest region)  following the well-marked and maintained trekking path, farmlands, suspension bridges, along the way.

The day destination is Phakding, and the views will be spectacular on the way. Depending upon the season, you shall unlock many grandiose views of the peaks, which are technically the tip of the iceberg. In addition, you will notice the beautiful villages of Chaurikharka, Chheplung, Koshigaun, and last but not least, Ghat. The trail follows the bank of the mighty Dudh Koshi River, and you will cross almost a half dozen high suspension bridges on this same itinerary, making the 1st day an exciting one.

The next day would be inspiring as you check in the Sagarmatha Sagarmatha National Park, now you will not only observe the first view of Mt. Everest (8848.86m), the exotic wildlife such as musk deer, the Himalayan tahr, the ghoral, the serow, the wolf, and rarely the Himalayan black bear and Himalayan vegetation as the forest is dominated by silver fir, birch, rhododendron, and juniper trees inside it. Along the way, walk around Thaktul Monastery, spin the prayer wheels and enjoy beautiful views of fluttering prayer flags.

The popular stops for relaxing, having lunch, or tea breaks are Tok Tok, Benkar, Jorsalle, and Monjo, which are facilitated by the teahouses run mainly by the locals. The locals have their way of surviving and seem busy in their respective works. Hundreds of tourists shall pass us; some ascend, and some return to Lukla after completing the journey.

Most of those villages have massive Mane walls carved in Buddhist languages; wishing you good luck on your upcoming journey. While visiting the Chortens and other religious shrines, it is said that one should always walk the clockwise direction (right to left) for good charm.

Thousands of prayer flags, large prayer wheels (Rotating bells), numerous suspension bridges, and the chilling cold breeze of the river are with you till you reach your day destination-Namche Bazaar. It is thrilling to see the increase in the height of suspension bridges the more you go towards your destination: the implausible Hillary suspension bridge on your way to Namche Bazar, where people tie prayer flags & Khata (a yellowish slice of cloth used on significant occasions).

After a steep uphill hike from Hillary Bridge via dense green pine forest, you reach the capital of Khumbu: the Namche Bazaar. You will spend more days in Namche Bazaar to acclimatize yourself and walk to the popular viewpoints around it.

During acclimatization, also ramble around the Sherpa town and visit the places like the Sherpa museum and, see traditional Sherpa households, art gallery and get insight at Sherpa way of surviving throughout history. Get a short glimpse of Syangboche Airport, the highest elevated airport in Nepal. Although it is not in operation now, the views are amazing around.

Hillary school, Yak farm, and Everest View Hotel-the highest elevated hotel in the world that is enlisted in a Guinness Book of World Records (2004) as the 'Highest Placed Hotel' in the world that elevates at 3880 meters (12,730 ft.) above the sea surface, and Khumjung Monastery that preserves of the nonexistent 'Yeti Scalp' which is not something that one can find in any part of the world are other attractions to see this very day.

The next day, you have another gem of the Everest Trek- Tengboche- a place where one of the world-famous Tengboche Monastery is 3867m (12687ft) with Panoramic views of the Himalayas situates. This monastery offers a calm and peaceful environment for praying and meditation. Famous as incense monastery, everyone can listen to the echo of air struck into the Himalayas and the melodic sounds of animals and birds.

The next day's destination after Tengboche is Dingboche which lies 4410m(14470ft) above sea level. An enchanting village of Dingboche Valley gets the entire Himalayas range in the Khumbu region around it. Every trekker falls in love with this spectacular creation of Mother Nature. Trekkers are welcomed by the breathtaking views of Lhotse (8,516 m/27,940 ft), Nuptse (7,861 m/25,791 ft), Makalu (8,485 meters/27,838 ft), Cho Oyu (26,867 feet/8,189 m)), Ama Dablam (6,812 m/22,349 ft), Thamserku 6,608 m /21,680 ft, Island Peak (6,189 m/20,305 ft), Mera Peak (6,476 m/21,247 ft), Lobuche (4,940 meters/16,210 ft) and several others peaks as they reach Dingboche.

Along the way, you will encounter several Chortens, stupas, monasteries, some small pocket-sized settlements, and stunning valleys. Pangboche Monastery is one of the 'must remember' places established in the 16th century, making the history of one of the eldest monasteries as pictures are not allowed inside the monastery (most of the monasteries do not allow photos inside). However, you still can see the skull and claws of the Yeti, which are said to be the loyal pet of prehistoric monks who survived in the Himalayas of those regions.

Ultimately, crossing the beautiful village of Debuche, a couple of river streams run directly from the mountains witnessing the magical view of Ama Dablam; reach Dingboche village where you will give rest your tired legs. Another day also will be spent in Dingboche for acclimatization. Despite the acclimatization, you can still visit Imja Lake and the river, which flows east to the village or hike up to Nagarjun Hill (5100 m/16728 ft). Although it is a bit adventurous to hike to Nagarjun Hill, it offers a majestic view of Everest, Lobuche East (6119m), Lobuche West (6145m), Taboche Peak (6367m), Thamserku (6608m), Kangtega (6685m) and Ama Dablam (6856m).

After another memorable acclimatization and a little hike around the valley, you will head towards another day's destination-Lobuche. On the way, you shall have an enthrall Thukla Pass and memorial park-a hill covered with Mane walls and stones with a tribute to the late legends of the mountains who approached in Khumbu section from each corner of the world to conquer the summits dreaming of representing their home flags flutter in the atop.

Continuing the downhill then flat hike via lateral moraine, you will reach Lobuche, which sits at an elevation of 4910m (16105ft) above sea level and more or less 8.5 km southwest of Everest Base Camp-your ultimate destination. Having the rare sight of Mt. Everest, get rest awaiting to kiss EBC the following day.

Spending a chilling night at Lobuche, head towards the final lodging place of the entire Khumbu section; Gorekshep. Yes! You heard the right; you are just a few hours back before the Everest Base Camp 5,364m (17598ft) and popular Kala Patthar 5545m (18192ft), the vantage point. Gorekshep (just by Khumbu Glacier) is a small valley filled with lodges and teahouses.

After check-in, one of the teahouses have the highest elevated lunch and heads towards Everest Base Camp, which approximately takes a couple of hours via glaciers. Stepping at Everest Base Camp will be one of those magical moments and a lifetime experience where you will not believe in yourself for a while.

Hello! You are at the foot of the tallest peak on the planet; you will have tears in your eyes and the sense of a significant achievement that will help you to forget all the hazardous events (if any) in the previous days. Be aware! You are already 5364m above sea level, and the level of oxygen in the air is relatively thin, and you might get caught by altitude sickness. Capture the surroundings in your electronics and head back to Gorekshep. As Everest is hiding behind, you shall hike to Kalapatthar the following day to view it.

The next day awake early morning with the wakeup call by your leader and gear up for the mesmerizing sunrise over the Everest panorama. Carry the fast snacks and at least two bottles of water, wear layers of warm clothes, carry a torchlight, and bring your trekking poles and follow every step of your leaders or fellow trekkers and hike upward, reaching Kala Patthar and wait for the first gleaming rays over Mt. Everest and several other neighboring peaks.

During sunrise, it seems as if the entire mountain range is being changed from black and white to colorful ones. The views are unimaginably spectacular, making all-around quite photogenic. Capturing all those dramatic scenes, head back to Gorekshep. Having breakfast at the teahouse of Goreksep, every event roams in your mind vividly. No words or pictures dare to explain the ecstasy you get while immersing yourself around the holy mountains with an intermingling of Himalayan Buddhist Culture.

You will spend the rest of the time hiking downwards and reaching Pheriche today. You will be amazed to see the hydropower projects even in elevations around 4300m above sea level. Now, you leave the mountains slowly, and they become aerial now, and you will spend your overnight at a cozy lodge. It is warmer now!

The next day, descend via Samora village and walk just half an hour away from the town of Pangboche. Now you are already familiar with the route as you used the same route beforehand. So, follow the path to Tengboche, reach Namche, and spend the second last day in the Himalayas.

On the final trekking day, follow the same trail you ascent, descend to Monjo, Phakding, and ultimately to Lukla, where you will take a flight back to Kathmandu. Enjoy your successful journey to Everest at Lukla with your team. Cheers!!

About the route

The real adventure to Everest Base Camp began after a spectacular 35 minutes flight to Lukla. From Lukla, with your crew, you walk through mani walls dangling suspension bridges over Dudh Koshi River and culturally rich Sherpa villages of Phakding, Monjo, and reach Namche Bazaar.

As we reach there, we feel the thin air and stay there for two nights to give our body time to acclimate to the altitude. Namche Bazaar is the center of old trade with Tibet for the region, and long trains of hairy yaks carrying goods over the mountains regularly share the trails with trekkers.

As we go higher, the vegetation gets more sparse, and the air thinner. Still, the looming peaks of Kananga, Cholatse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Nuptse, and eventually Everest are enough to make us overlook our struggle.

Our final destination is Everest Base Camp, set on the edge of the Khumbu glacier, amidst a sea of rocks, ice, tents, and prayer flags. Everest Base Camp becomes a lively, exciting place and a center for the mountaineering world every spring.

We also climb the rocky outcrop of Kala Patar whose prayer flag blanketed summit provides the spectacular view of the Everest massif, with the South Col and the Hillary Step visible along with all other Everest Himalayan range. From Everest Base Camp, we follow the same way back down through the Khumbu Valley to Lukla and end our trip to Kathmandu.

Why Everest?

"Because it is there." is the best answer when somebody asks you why Everest. Anybody wants to be on top of the world, at least for a few minutes once in a lifetime, and summiting Everest may not sound like what you can do. This is when the Everest base camp trek comes in handy.

It promises to take you as close to the highest point of the world as possible. This trek is the best option to skip the toil and trouble endured by the Legendary Hillary and Norgay, and still enjoy the vivacity of the Himalayas.

Everest Base camp trek takes you along the classic yak caravan routes through traditional Sherpa villages and monasteries (Gompas). You will have an opportunity to witness their iconic cultures accompanied by colorful festivals in different parts of Khumbu (Everest region).

Flashy Chortens and Prayer flags are scattered throughout the alleys, propelling a Buddhist vibe along the trail. In addition, you will come across some of the most beautiful sceneries found nowhere else in the world. To sum up, this trek means to your life.

This question can be interpreted as 'Why Everest?' The answer may not always be 'because it is there.' However, with all the inconvenience you go through in this trek, it is pretty reasonable to ask whether this trek is worth undertaking.

Hundreds of our trekkers have mentioned that this trek has been the turning point of their life. They say they have discovered a new perspective to see the world and beyond after this trek. But what are the key things that you can learn from this trek?

Who can attempt Everest Base Camp (EBC) Trek?

The ups and downs do not trouble me the most during the trek. But the altitude is the real distress. As soon as you land at Lukla Airport, you are at an altitude of 2840 m above sea level, which is pretty high. So, attempting this trek requires a lot of energy and endurance.

I can't say that the people of this age group can only venture this trek because the 70s people have already proved me wrong. Therefore, to attempt this trek, you must be fit (regardless of your age) and should have the ability to sustain the high-altitude pressure, a low oxygen atmosphere, and icy wind, at the same time.

No matter how fit you think you are, follow the acclimatization techniques seriously, or else Everest will kick you off.

Trek Difficulty

While trekking, voyagers reach the height of 5,364 meters (17,598 ft)-EBC and 5,643 m (18,514 ft)-Kalapatthar. Trekking above 4000m and above, altitude sickness can be a threat.

You need to be in good shape and stamina for this trek as it requires walking for about 5 to 6 hours, excluding the acclimation days. The rugged trails, steep terrains, and high passes prove more burdensome.

So, before you opt for this trek, it is necessary to understand the confrontation and complexity of the trek so that you can be trained on how to overcome them for a safe journey.

Everest Base Camp Trek is possible in both ways trek in a group or independently. Most of our clients prefer to trek in the organized treks because;

  • It is comfortable, safe, and secured. As we provide a guide and a porter (one porter for 2 people), you need not worry about the trail, accommodation, and daily destinations.
  • In the peak months, there are numerous trekkers throughout the trail. There may lack accommodation in the teahouses. As the guides have good connections with the hotels, can pre-book the needed rooms.

In case of emergencies, guides contact immediately to the respective company for the emergency evacuation. In need helicopter rescue can be done as soon as possible.

Basically, you need to have two permits to Trek Everest Base Camp;

  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit: A permit is needed as you will be trekking through the National Park territory which expenses NPR 3000 per person.
  • The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit: A permit that replaced the old TIMS- Trekkers Information Management System in 2018 and it costs NPR per person.

Yes, you need to have insurance for your safety. You should buy medical and mountain evacuation insurance for trekking up 5,500m. We highly recommend you to buy an insurance policy in your country make sure that your insurance cover helicopter evacuation if in case when you are on the trek up to 5500m

Of course, it is possible to get a bottle of mineral water during the trek. Most of the teahouses and restaurants facilitate with bottled or purified water. However, with the elevation, the price of everything rises.

Even if you don’t want to buy the water; there are a plethora of sources of water throughout the trail and tea houses where you can fill up your bottles and use water purification tablets to make it safe to drink.

It depends whether you take a porter or not. Taking a porter, you need not carry anything except your personal belongings. You carry only our personal valuable good as a small day-pack filled with fleece jacket, waterproofs, warm hat, sunhat, sun-cream, water bottle, first aid kit, and camera and water purification tablets with you in your day pack.

You can hoard the needless things that you are not going to use during the trek, can leave at our hotel in Kathmandu while are on trek. Trekking without porters may add an extra burden to your trip. You need to carry all the gears, equipment, and clothing needed in the Himalayan journey.

Me and my son did EBC trek with Holy Mountain Treks on November 2018. We had the most unforgettable and exciting trip from beginning to end all made possible by the professional and meticulous service provided by Holy mountain team. Our guide Ram who met us at the airport was attentive to our every needs and he ensured we had a very safe, exhilarating and memorable time in the mountains. He continually shared his knowledge and many years of experience of the region and Sherpa culture, which we loved. Our porter Kanchha was also very friendly. The trek was challenging in parts but this was surpassed by the breathtaking surroundings and encouragement from Ram. This was our first trip to Nepal and we will definitely be back and we will definitely be trekking with Holy Mountain treks again. We can only give them the highest recommendation!!  Many many thanks, Ethan Miller Japan

Just over a year ago I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to go trekking in Nepal. On arriving I stayed at the Kathmandu Boutique hotel which was absolutely amazing. A few days later I booked my 16 day trek through the hotel and was introduced to my guide Ram. Til this day I call Ram a great friend we had lots of laughs and he made the experience that much better for me. He was extremely knowledgeable on the routes and the mountain range and could answer any of my questions. All in all I highly recommend Ram and his company to make your experience in Nepal that much better!!

Me and my friend Julia booked this trek after a short communication with Parshu. Our guide Ram was terrific. He answered all our questions perfectly. He was always concerned to make us safe, and comfortable. Our porter Krishna was very helpful and strong. He carried our duffle bags throughout the journey. The flight to Lukla was thrilling. In the early days, I felt a bit uneasy due to climate change. After acclimatizing in Namche Bazaar, I felt comfortable. Namche is the trading hub in the Khumbu region where numerous Sherpa are engaging in business. We bought some trekking gears there and marched ahead. The view from Kalapatthar was excellent. We could see Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Icefall, and glacier vividly. Food, accommodation, services, pace, views, trekking team were better than expected. So, we highly recommend Holy Mountain Treks and Ram for touring and trekking in Nepal.

I trekked Everest Base Camp trek with Puja in May 2019. As a female was worried about the journey as I was alone to trek. I emailed some companies and got an immediate response from HMT. They agreed to offer me a female guide. Then I booked the trek. Puja, my guide became my friend at first meet. She is an informative, knowledgeable, courageous lady who responded to all my queries in the journey. She checked me several times if everything is perfect. My porter Hari was patient, helpful, and ever-smiling. Although I could not see Everest from the lower elevations due to the hazy weather, I got panoramic views of it and its neighboring peaks when I reached Kala Patthar. You should never miss the first rays of sun over the Himalayas from this vantage point. As the journey was comfortable, the company was very responsive, the service was unforgettable, the staffs were hospitable and friendly, I never hesitate to recommend this company.

One of the most amazing adventures of my life-EBC Trek gave me and my friends the best experience. The sceneries, people, and their culture, and the animals were diverse. Our guide Ram was very helpful, kind, and knowledgeable. He kept our needs and satisfaction is the top priority. Next, the flight from and to Lukla was a thrilling experience. I was feeling that I am in the next world throughout the journey as every aspect and moment was breathtaking. I must say that it was my life experience and traveling to Nepal and trekking in Everest is not enough by visiting once only.

My father and I trekked in Everest with Holy Mountains in March 2019, which was a wonderful experience. Tour manager Parshu was diligent, responsive, and very co-operative. My guide Prakash was professional, efficient, and helpful. He always kept our needs as a priority. He is dedicated to making our journey safe and comfortable. The sunrise view over Mt. Everest was magnificent. The mountains were gleaming in front of us. I could imagine if I were on the top of the Everest reaching its base. Perfect Experience ever!!!!

This was one of the once-in-a-lifetime trekking experiences. The entire trek cannot be covered in even a hundred thousand words. Suffices to say that you should undertake it if you haven’t till now. The arrangements were fabulous; the trek unforgettable though extremely demanding physically and the beautiful country we passed through was amazing, to say the least. Reaching the Base Camp of the tallest peak of the world was a sight and a different level of experience. If you love unspoiled nature, forests, birds, water, and mountains then don't miss this. Prepare well and please hire a guide and porter. Several agencies in Kathmandu arrange these hikes but we recommend you to trek with Holymountain Treks as they offer quality and affordable services.

Last year, we trekked the base of tallest peak of the world- Mt. Everest. In course, we witnessed the sheer beauty of the diverse Himalayan landscape as you hike through remote villages, fairy-tale forests, vast moorlands cut by cascading rivers and the blue-hued peaks of base camp as they glow under starlight! We could experience a magical sunrise over the Annapurna ranges from the spectacular heights of Kalapatthar(5545m)– an early morning hike to this prime spot well worth the effort. Choosing the right company- Holy Mountain by an experienced trek leader along with assistant guides and porters, who did not only gave us all the support and guidance we required along the way, but also introduced us to the rich local Sherpa culture.
