Trip Overview

The capital city of Nepal: Kathmandu is deficient in fresh air, tranquillity and tidiness. Being a metropolis, Nepal’s city of dreams is overcrowded and filled to the brim with noise, pollution and haphazard construction works. Far from this chaos yet within spitting distance, Shivapuri-Nagarjun National Park renders a pristine location for your retreat in the lap of nature. Positioned nearly 15km north of Kathmandu City; Shivapuri-Nagarjun National Park lies among the lush green hills surrounding the Kathmandu Valley.  A day hike in this picturesque terrain is revitalizing and blissful.

The national park was established in 2002 A.D. with the aim to protect the native species of flora and fauna; covering an area of 159 sq. km. in the district of Kathmandu, Nuwakot, Dhading and Sindhupalchowk. In terms of flora and fauna, Shivapuri-Nagarjun National Park harbours Himalayan subtropical broadleaf woodlands that provide safe haven to a wide-ranging faunal diversity including birds, reptiles and mammals mainly Chinese pangolin, Himalayan goral, barking deer, Himalayan pika,  Himalayan black bear, yellow-throated marten, Clouded leopard,  Monocled Cobra, Himalayan keelback,  slender-billed scimitar-babbler, white-gorgeted flycatcher, and many more.  Home to Shivapuri Peak, the second highest hill around Kathmandu valley; the vicinity of the national park also highlights Bagdwar, the place where the Holy River Bagmati originates and flows around the region. It is the only place where you can discover the water of Bagmati River, pure and drinkable. Besides that, the region also flaunts Nagi Gumpa, a renowned Buddhist nunnery along with remarkable landscape outlook of Kathmandu valley on a clear daylight.

Trip Description:

Before the crack of the dawn, we wake up and prepare for the wonderful hike. Succeeding some healthy breakfast, we set off for the nearly 30mins drive to Budhanilkantha (Narayansthan) via a private means of transport. Here, we’ll make a stopover and visit Budhanilkantha, one of the most religious Hindu shrine. This open-air temple showcases colossal reclining stone statue of Lord Vishnu that is believed to be carved out from a single block of black basalt. After paying our homage, we'll make a short climb to a check post situated at the southern gate of the Shivapuri-Nagarjun National Park. Guarded by military personnel, we are required to register ourselves and show our permits here. Thereafter, we start our uphill climb through the woodlands of pine, oak and rhododendron. The trekking trail consists of both stone steps and earthen track covered with plant litter. Subsequently, we progress to Nagi Gumpa, a beautiful Buddhist nunnery where nuns practice Buddhism. Filled with an essence of spirituality, you can self-mediate here and uncover inner peace. Afterwards, we hike to Bagdwar, the source of the holy Bagmati River. Here, you’ll find quite hard to believe your own eyes as you witness clean and drinkable water of Bagmati River, which tends to transform into thick, sludgy, and noxious muck as it runs beyond the centre of Kathmandu. Along the entire hike, you can listen to the pleasant chirping of birds with their elegant glimpses in the wilderness.  If luck is on your side, then you may observe rare and exotic wild animals. But remember to maintain a distance from them!! Subsequent to a short break for lunch, we ascend to Shivapuri Peak (2,730m), which showcases a mesmerizing panorama of entire Kathmandu Valley on a clear daytime. Later on, we hike back to the starting point of our hike i.e. southern gate of the national park and drive back to the hotel via private vehicle.
