The Nagarkot–Dhulikhel–Namobuddha hike is one of the rewarding short trekking routes in the Himalayas. Ideal for those who do not have time for longer treks into the mountain foothills or extensive travel, this 3nights/4 days journey offers a beautiful glimpse of Nepal’s villages, forests, mountains, and distant Himalayan panoramas.

The hike begins with a scenic 32 km drive to Nagarkot, a hill station renowned for its breathtaking, uninterrupted views of the Eastern Himalayas. From here, on clear days, you can witness panoramic vistas of Himalayan ranges of Langtang, Ganesh Himal, and Annapurna and even Everest. Nagarkot is especially famous for its stunning sunrise and sunset views, attracting both international and domestic visitors throughout the year.

From Nagarkot, the trail gently descends toward Dhulikhel, an ancient Newari town known for its rich cultural heritage, traditional architecture, and artistic monuments. The journey continues onward to Namobuddha, one of Nepal’s most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites, where many visitors come to experience peace, meditation, and yoga in a serene spiritual setting. The hike concludes with a drive back to Kathmandu, marking a memorable end to this short Himalayan experience.

Detailed Itinerary

We begin the day at a relaxed pace, enjoying a late morning before setting off around 1:00 pm for Nagarkot. A scenic drive of about 1.5 hours takes us to this popular hill station, located just 32 km from Kathmandu and well known for its sweeping Himalayan views. Nagarkot is surrounded by lush pine forests and dotted with comfortable lodges and resorts, making it one of the best places near Kathmandu to enjoy mountain scenery right from your hotel balcony.

From Nagarkot, on clear days, you can enjoy panoramic views of eight major Himalayan ranges of Nepal, including Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Jugal, Rolwaling, Everest (Mahalangur), and Numbur, along with views of the Kathmandu Valley and Shivapuri National Park. After check-in and lunch at the hotel, we take a short hike to the view tower at the top of the hill. Here, we relax and enjoy the stunning Himalayan sunset before returning to the hotel.

We wake up early morning to not miss chance to enjoy sunrise over the Himalayas from our hotel in Nagarkot. After breakfast, we begin our hike towards Dhulikhel, following a beautiful ridge trail that offers continuous mountain views on clear days. The route passes through peaceful pine forests, terraced farmlands, and traditional villages, giving a wonderful glimpse of rural life in the hills.

The walk is moderate and enjoyable, with gentle ups and downs along scenic countryside paths. Along the way, we encounter local settlements, prayer flags, and small farming communities that reflect the authentic lifestyle of the region. As we approach Dhulikhel, the landscape opens up to wide panoramic views of the Himalayas and the historic Newari town below.

By afternoon, we arrive in Dhulikhel, a charming cultural town known for its rich heritage, temples, and traditional architecture. After check-in, there is time to explore the old town and relax while enjoying the sunset over the mountains. Overnight in Dhulikhel.

Starting from the historic Newari town of Dhulikhel, the trail gradually descends into terraced farmland, small villages, and forested paths, offering beautiful views of the surrounding hills and distant Himalayan ranges. It is a moderately easy walk, with a mix of gentle descents and gradual ascents that make the route enjoyable and accessible for most trekkers.

As the trail continues, the environment becomes increasingly serene, passing through traditional settlements, prayer flags, and quiet countryside paths. The final section involves a gradual climb up to Namo Buddha, one of Nepal’s most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites, known for its monastery and spiritual significance linked to the legend of Prince Mahasattva. Upon arrival, visitors can explore the monastery complex and enjoy the calm, reflective atmosphere with panoramic views of the surrounding hills. Overnight in Namobuddha in the monastry guesthouse.

After breakfast you will explore the Namobuddha monastery (Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery). Visit the serene monastery complex, prayer halls, and sacred stupa, and learn about the inspiring legend of Prince Mahasattva, who is believed to have offered his life to save a starving tigress and her cubs. Take time to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and panoramic views of the rolling hills before lunch. Late afternoon, you will drive back to Kathmandu, marking the end of your Nagarkot-Dhulikhel-Namobuddha trip.
